Non-surgical cosmetic procedure to rejuvenate the skin
Procedure Summary
Mesotherapy uses a series of micro-injections just below the surface of the skin to replenish it with the minerals, vitamins and amino acids that we lose as we age. This non-surgical technique is designed to deliver corrective treatment for a broad range of conditions, from weight loss to skin rejuvenation, from hair re-growth to cellulite reduction. Originally developed by a Frenchman called Dr Michel Pistor in the 1950s, mesotherapy was initially used to treat rheumatism and general aches and pains. Since then, the recognised benefits of this directly targeted therapy have multiplied, leading to the use of mesotherapy to address a number of aesthetic and medical needs with very little risk of complications. Are you a candidate for mesotherapy? One popular use of mesotherapy is as a surgery-free, rapid-recuperation alternative to liposuction. When used as an injectable cellulite treatment, mesotherapy has been referred to as the ‘fat-melting jab’. The mesotherapy injections modify fat cells to effectively eliminate the fat without destroying the fat cell. When used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, mesotherapy offers a simple approach to getting rid of surplus body fat. Cellulite, which develops as a result of poor circulation, weak connective tissues, lymphatic congestion and hormonal changes, also shows benefits after a course of mesotherapy. Alopecia, or hair loss, can be triggered by hormonal changes, nutritional imbalances, or poor circulation. By tackling each of these issues, mesotherapy may stimulate hair follicles so that it re-grows. The antioxidants and amino acids delivered into the skin by mesotherapy can repair the harm caused by free radicals, trigger fat dissolution and tighten loose skin – rejuvenating the skin with a fresh and youthful appearance. As well as cosmetic enhancement, mesotherapy is said to have a variety of medicinal applications. Patients suffering from the following conditions can benefit: muscle spasms, stress, insomnia, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, infections, RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) and osteoarthritis, among others. The wide variety of problems that can be treated with mesotherapy is possible because each treatment is formulated to meet each patient's unique condition. It should be noted that there is mixed clinical opinion about the effectiveness of the treatment. Before undergoing mesotherapy, you should feel sure that it can deliver what you want and the cosmetic improvements you wish to see. A typical response of people that have had the treatment is that it leaves skin looking rested, radiant, glowing and firmer. The results are not permanent, with many patients having injections every three months. Your suitability for the procedure can be discussed with your doctor or dermatologist. In addition, you should not undergo mesotherapy if you have an allergy to any of the substances being injected. Undergoing the mesotherapy treatment Mesotherapy involves multiple injections with a very fine needle by a doctor or nurse. A very small amount of the blend of vitamins, amino acids and other medications is injected into each site. The actual mixture depends upon the problem being treated. The needle only enters the mesoderm or surface layer of the skin. There should be no pain but, if you wish, a local anaesthetic cream can be applied before the injections to prevent any discomfort. It total, the treatment will take no longer than 20 minutes. Side-effects are rare but could include small bruises, which will disappear after a few days, and some minor swelling that will die away after a day or so. Some people may experience an allergic reaction to the products used, although this is very rare. As one woman commented after undergoing regular mesotherapy sessions to tighten the skin around her neck, “I look upon my mesotherapy treatments as part of my regular maintenance. I visit the gym twice a week, I have a fortnightly manicure, I have a monthly massage – and I have my 3-monthly mesotherapy as regular as clockwork.” Who should carry out mesotherapy? This treatment is usually carried out by doctors and nurses. There has been some concern voiced about the effectiveness and safety of some of the substances used in mesotherapy. Which is why it is essential to choose a practitioner with experience in a suitable establishment and an irreproachable track record. The cost of mesotherapy treatment can range from £50 to hundreds of pounds per session. If mesotherapy is something that you are considering, you can discuss all of the issues mentioned here in greater depth during a consultation with a knowledgeable practitioner.
