Titanium-Coated Breast Implants

A Beginner’s Guide to Titanium-Coated Breast Implants with impartial, expert information and advice.

Like all silicone gel breast implants available in the UK today, the Titanium-coated implants are filled with silicone gel and have a silicone elastomer shell. The shell for this particular implant is coated with Titanium. The idea of the microscopic Titanium coating is that Titanium is seen as a bio-compatible metal, which will not react with the body's natural tissue, thus avoiding inflammation, scarring or allergy.

The Titanium-Coated Breast Implant product has been manufactured by the French company Poly Implants Prostheses (PIP) who manufacture several types of breast implants available in the UK. The Titanium coating was supplied by the German Company GfE Gesellschaft für Elektrometallurgie mbH. The commercial name for these implants is TiBreze (or TiBreeze). You can visit these companies websites here.

However, at the time of writing (May 2008) these Titanium-coated breast implants do not carry the CE mark to represent passing various European standards, so are not available to the UK. Clinical trials continue in both Germany and Australia. You can view details of the clinical trials in Australia here.

The Titanium-coated breast implants should not be confused with the Titanium Mesh Breast Implants.
