The vaginal muscles often become loose as we age, especially after multiple childbirths. Among other consequences, this can have a detrimental effect on the pleasure gained from sexual intercourse. Vaginoplasty, also known as vaginal tightening and vaginal rejuvenation, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is performed to restore the vaginal muscles to their more youthful tightness.

Surgery has been available for many years to correct physical problems with the vagina. However, plastic surgery for women seeking to enhance their vagina is a relatively new development. Although it has been popular in the USA for a few years, the procedure is only recently taking off in the UK. Even so, it may seem less widespread than it actually is as, unlike facelifts and tummy tucks, a vaginoplasty is not something that is typically discussed at dinner parties!

What can a vaginoplasty do for you?

Many women are left with weak, loose, vaginal muscles after childbirth. This can cause embarrassment, discomfort and sexual dissatisfaction. Exercises are available to tighten the vagina, though these are not always fully effective. By tightening the vaginal muscles and supporting tissues, cosmetic surgery on the vagina can return the vagina of a women of any age to a pre-pregnancy state. As one woman commented after her vaginoplasty operation, “After giving birth to my third child my vaginal muscles were stretched and weakened beyond any use. I opted for vaginal tightening cosmetic surgery, not because I wanted a ‘designer vagina’, but simply because I wanted my old vagina back!”

After undergoing a vaginoplasty, you will be aware of a decrease in the diameter of the vagina and an increase in the tightness of the vaginal muscles. All this is achieved without affecting the all-important G-spot. Your particular suitability for surgery will be discussed during your initial consultation with the surgeon.

Undergoing vaginoplasty surgery

You do not need to take any special precautions before the surgery and you may have sexual intercourse until the day before the surgery. VaginoplastyHowever, you should bear in mind that the ideal time to perform a vaginoplasty is immediately after menstruation. This way, when the next menstruation begins, the incisions will be completely healed.

The vaginoplasty operation is usually performed under a general anaesthetic and lasts between 1 and 2 hours. It is treated as a day case, though there may be occasions where an overnight stay is necessary. During the operation the surgeon will use dissolvable stitches to join together the stretched muscle at the back of the vagina, effectively shortening it. The surgeon will then remove any excess vaginal lining (vaginal mucosa) and tighten the surrounding soft tissues. Some surgeons may use a laser to carry out this procedure.

After the operation has been completed, an adhesive strip will be applied to the vulva and a vaginal stent will be used to help the vagina retain its shape during the healing process. This will have to remain in place for the first week and then only when you sleep for the following two weeks. It is essential to maintain high standards of hygiene whenever you use the lavatory during the healing period. You should be able to walk comfortably within a few days after surgery. All scars will be hidden inside the vagina, and any bruising that may appear near the vagina will disappear in a matter of days. You will be able to return to work a week after surgery, and 4 to 6 weeks after surgery you may resume sexual activities. “I must admit,” commented one woman after her vaginoplasty, “ the last thing that I felt like after my surgery was sex. However, once my body had had chance to recuperate, I soon felt ready to put my enhanced vagina to good use!”

As with all cosmetic surgery, it is essential to follow the advice of your practitioner after the procedure. This will make the outcome as successful as possible and reduce the risk of complications

Who should carry out your vaginal tightening procedure?

Only fully trained and qualified surgeons specialising in plastic surgery and gynaecology and with experience gained in an establishment registered with the Healthcare Commission (in the UK) should perform vaginal surgery. The cost of a vaginoplasty can range from £2,500 to £4,500. If this procedure is something that you are considering, you can discuss all of the issues mentioned here in greater depth during a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon.
