A Beginner’s Guide to Silicone Gel Breast Implants with impartial, expert information and advice.

Silicone Gel Breast Implants are the most common type of breast implant material used today for a Mammaplasty Breast Augmentation surgery. Generally accepted breast implant statistics claim that around 10,000 breast enlargement implants are administered each year in the UK, 80% of which use silicone gel implants. All silicone gel implants sold in the UK must carry the CE-mark to verify that the product complies with various compulsory health and safety requirements set out in European Directives.

According to the Department of Health (DoH) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the only types of breast enhancement implants available in the UK for Breast Augmentation surgery are silicone and saline implants. The main reason for the preference of silicone gel is due the silicone gel's semi-liquid consistency, which moves realistically and is natural to the touch.

However, it can be easy to assume that all silicone gel breast implants are the same. This in fact is not the case. There are indeed several variations of the silicone gel breast implant. The main difference in the various silicone breast implant types is in the material used for the outer-coating, or 'shell' of the silicone implant.

A vast majority of silicone breast implants have an outer shell made from a firm, silicone elastic (or elastomer), which are filled with the synthetic silicone gel material. The silicone elastomer is used for it's strong, tensile (stretchy) and tear-resistant qualities, all of which have been rigorously tested on the silicone elastomer.
