Originally developed by a Frenchman called Dr Michel Pistor in the 1950s,  mesotherapy was initially used to treat rheumatism and general aches and pains. The results are not permanent, with many patients having injections every three months. Your suitability for the procedure can be discussed with your doctor or dermatologist. In addition, you should not undergo mesotherapy if you have an allergy to any of the substances being injected.

Undergoing the mesotherapy treatment

Mesotherapy involves multiple injections with a very fine needle by a doctor or nurse. A very small amount of the blend of vitamins, amino acids and other medications is injected into each site. The actual mixture depends upon the problem being treated. The needle only enters the mesoderm or surface layer of the skin. There should be no pain but, if you wish, a local anaesthetic cream can be applied before the injections to prevent any discomfort. It total, the treatment will take no longer than 20 minutes.

Side-effects are rare but could include small bruises, which will disappear after a few days, and some minor swelling that will die away after a day or so. Some people may experience an allergic reaction to the products used, although this is very rare. As one woman commented after undergoing regular mesotherapy sessions to tighten the skin around her neck, “I look upon my mesotherapy treatments as part of my regular maintenance. I visit the gym twice a week, I have a fortnightly manicure, I have a monthly massage – and I have my 3-monthly mesotherapy as regular as clockwork.”

Who should carry out mesotherapy?

This treatment is usually carried out by doctors and nurses. There has been some concern voiced about the effectiveness and safety of some of the substances used in mesotherapy. Which is why it is essential to choose a practitioner with experience in a suitable establishment and an irreproachable track record.
