Fat reduction injections for flab hotspots
Procedure Summary
Lipotherapy is a form of cosmetic surgery involving the use of fat reduction injections to shrink specific areas of the body that cannot be reduced or ‘firmed up’ through weight loss alone. Lipotherapy, sometimes referred to as injection lipolysis, is commonly used to treat small areas such as double chins, under the eyes or flab hanging under the arms. The idea of fat reduction injections may seem like science fiction, but the procedure was developed in 1995 by a Brazilian dermatologist called Dr. Rittes who injected a substance called phosphatidylcholine (PPT), a natural compound produced from the soya bean, directly into the fatty area. The treatment was further developed by Dr. Hasengschwandtner of Austria who perfected the procedure so that fewer sessions were required to produce the same result. Realistic Expectations of results Lipotherapy is not designed to be used as a weight loss programme. In fact, the best results are obtained with fit, healthy patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or less. And, of course, fat reduction injections do not stop you gaining weight in the future. Injection lipolysis is effective only for reducing small, local accumulations of fat that will not disappear through diet or physical exercise. Liposuction is preferable for larger fat accumulations. While a majority of patients experience a significant reduction in the fatty area being treated, around 20% of patients do not. In addition, you will be unsuitable for the procedure if you suffer from diabetes, HIV, kidney disease, severe hypertension, cardiac problems, haemophilia or are taking blood thinning medications. Undergoing lipotherapy treatment Injection lipolysis has been performed for a number of years without any serious complications. However, you should note that a fat reduction injection treatment called Lipostabil®, also marketed as Flabjab™, Lipomelt, Lipodissolve and Fat-Away, is not licensed for use in the UK. During Lipotherapy, several small injections of phosphatidylcholine, the fat-busting ingredient, are made into the fatty area. Small amounts of the fat will dissolve into the lymphatic system, enabling it to be metabolised and subsequently eliminated from your body. Anaesthesia is not required and the treatment will last approximately 30 minutes. Significant swelling and redness will appear in the area being treated immediately after the application. It will feel sore and may show some bruising. This should all be gone after one week (although sometimes the swelling lasts longer). More normal activity and gentle exercise will be possible after the first week. “I have never been overweight,” said one lipotherapy patient, “but I have always had a flabby area between my chin and neck. Once the swelling had died down after my treatment, it was amazing to see how the fat reduction injections had literally shrank my multiple chins down to the single chin I was born with!” To accelerate the removal of fat from your body it is a good idea to drink at least two litres of water per day and to make sure you are getting plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You will notice the effect of the lipotherapy treatment around three weeks after the treatment. At this point you may wish to decide whether further sessions are necessary. Typically, people have up to 6 sessions, or if a more intensive approach is used, 3 sessions may be sufficient. As with all cosmetic surgery, it is essential to follow the advice of your practitioner after the procedure. This will make the outcome as successful as possible and reduce the risk of complications Who should carry out lipotherapy treatment? Every licensed physician is allowed to practise injection lipolysis. However, you should remember that it is a specialist skill, so you should seek out only well trained practitioners with plenty of lipotherapy experience. Prices start at anything from £150 to £300. So, if removing stubborn fat without resorting to the cosmetic surgeon's knife is something that appeals to you, you can discuss all of the issues mentioned here in greater depth during a consultation with a lipotherapy specialist.
