Can I get Tattoo removal on the NHS? You are unlikely to get a tattoo removal on the NHS as it is seen as a largely cosmetic procedure. Although there are several ways to have a Tattoo removed, including laser, surgical and dermabrasion, you will often need to go to a private clinic for your tattoo removal procedure. However, if you feel that having a free NHS tattoo removal will relieve any distress, mental or psychological problems caused by the tattoo, then your GP may be able to refer you to the Primary Care Trust for further review before you can get you tattoo removed on the NHS. A Free tattoo removal on the NHS may even require you to visit a psychiatrist to assess the distress caused by not having your tattoo removal. In 2006, the number of NHS tattoo removal procedures carried out in the UK was over 187,000 as reported by the health minister. This number of tattoo removals on the NHS is likely to have cost the NHS around £300 million pounds. |
