A Beginner’s Guide to Titanium Mesh Breast Implants with impartial, expert information and advice.

Cohesive Gel Breast Implants are relatively new to the cosmetic surgery market and have been in use for the last fifteen years or so. The Cohesive Gel Breast Implants vary from silicone filled breast implants by the consistency of the implant filler material. Cohesive Gel Breast Implants contain a semi-solid jelly-like filler, which do not leak when cut or ruptured, unlike the more traditional liquid-like silicone or saline filled implants. However, various studies have shown that Cohesive Gel Breast Implants may not be as effective in avoiding silicone spread around the body as initially anticipated. Although it is clear that if ruptured the spread of silicone around the body is greatly minimised with Cohesive Gel Breast Implants.

Also known as solid, high-cohesive, form-stable or Gummy Bear Breast Implants - due to its rubbery consistency when cut resembling the American Gummy Bear sweets (similar to Jelly Baby sweets in the UK) - are made from the same silicone material as standard silicone breast implants and vary only in the firmness of its consistency. They also contain the same silicone-based (silicone elastic or elastomer) outer-shell as normal silicone or saline breast implants, hence the use of Cohesive Gel Implants carrying the CE-mark (to indicate European Certification) in the UK is widely accepted as they suggest to pose a smaller risk to the body than ordinary breast implants.

Another major advantage of the Cohesive Gel Breast Implants is that their semi-solid consistency allows implants of a more natural shape to be manufactured. Such tear-drop shaped implants are often referred to as Anatomical implants. These high-cohesive breast implants are also usually preferred by surgeons as the implants maintain their shape and remain upright in the body. They are also less likely to fold or ripple over time.

One of the main down-sides to the Form-Stable Cohesive Gel Implants is that they require a slightly larger incision to be made in order to insert the implant. You may also find that the Gummy Bear Breast Implants are more expensive than the silicone or saline implants.

A major manufacturer of cohesive gel silicone breast implants is the French company Poly Implants Prostheses (PIP). You can see a description of their products on their website.
