A Beginner’s Guide to NHS Breast Enlargment Surgery with impartial, expert information and advice. Breast Augmentation cosmetic surgery is rarely available in the UK on the National Health Service (NHS). Any operations that are primarily undergone for aesthetic reasons, such as breast implant surgery, are not covered as free NHS treatments as they are not considered as medical treatments. Rather, this form of surgery is known as elective surgery, where the patient chooses to undergo such non-essential treatments. The NHS will not usually pay for a Breast Enlargement surgery. However, there are some instances in which you can receive a Breast Enhancement operation on the NHS free of charge. As with any form of cosmetic surgery, your first option should be to consult your local GP who can provide you with advice on getting a free Mammaplasty on the NHS. A free Breast Enlargement surgery on the NHS is usually available when you can show that you are experiencing some form of psychological distress as a result of not enlarging your breast size. Your GP would need to assess whether you are having any form of physical or mental health problems, such as depression, as a result of not receiving a Breast Augmentation operation. Any assessment that concludes that your mental health is being affected will need to be agreed by your local PCT (Primary Care Trust) or health authority and will almost certainly involve visiting a psychologist or psychiatrist to help you resolve the issues before you can receive your breast implant plastic surgery on the NHS. Another way in which you could receive a free Breast Enlargement NHS surgery is if it is to correct any congenital abnormality (i.e. birth defect) or genetically small, under-developed or un-even breasts. This again will require approval from your GP and may involve some level of psychological therapy or counselling. Finally, you may wish to have an NHS Breast Enlargement operation as a result of undergoing any other surgery, such as breast cancer removal surgery (Mastectomy) whereby a breast removal operation has been undertaken. Again, your GP will be able to help refer you to a specialist plastic surgeon who is BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) or BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons) registered. < Back to Mammaplasty - Breast Enlargement
